Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites combine high strength, high stiffness, light weight, anti-corrosion and high durability than either of their constituents alone. The lightweight, high strength, non-corrosive and non-conductive attributes of FRPs have been of particular interest to the aviation industry. Nowadays, increasing numbers of application of FRP materials in civil engineering are being made and attracting engineers. In the USA, Europe, Canada, and Japan, various guidelines, codes and standards for the application of FRPs in civil engineering have been developed, which is also an important objective and direction for us. The 2012 International Workshop on Applications of FRP Composites in Civil Engineering, jointly organized by National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), China Engineering Consultants Inc. (CECI) and Chinese Taiwan Society for Earthquake Engineering will be held in Taipei, Taiwan on November 5–6, 2012, at the NCREE.
The primary objective of this international workshop is to advocate and promote the understanding and application of FRP techniques in Taiwan’s civil engineering projects. The international workshop will address the following topics:
1.Overview, Trends and Perspectives of FRP in Civil Engineering.
2.Design Codes and Guidelines for FRPs in Civil Engineering.
3.Advanced Research Topics on FRPs in Civil Engineering.
4.Applications of FRP Composites in Civil Engineering.
Some outstanding professors and senior researchers were invited to present their achievements in the applications of FRP composites in civil engineering and to share their experiences. These include: Professor Urs MEIER from Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research, Switzerland; Dr. Benjamin TANG from the Bridge Engineering Section of the Oregon Department of Transportation, USA; Professor Moe M.S. CHEUNG from the Ottawa-Carleton Bridge Research Institute, Canada; Professor W.Q. LIU from Nanjing University of Technology, China; Professor J.G. TENG from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong; Professor SUGIURA from Kyoto University, Japan; Professor S.W. LEE from Kookmin University, Korea; Professor C.C. CHOU from the National Taiwan University; Adviser L.H. SHENG from China Engineering Consultants Inc.; and Dr. C.S. LEE from the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction, Taiwan. It is believed that this event will successfully advocate and promote the understanding and application of FRP techniques in Taiwan’s civil engineering projects and that local researchers and engineers will learn useful information.
