Post-tensioned seismic building systems have the advantage of re-centering after the
effects of earthquake ground accelerations, thereby eliminating permanent drift and
reducing the need for demolishing a building after an earthquake. However, past
research on this type of structural system is rather limited. Recently, coordinated
research programs have been launched in the US and Taiwan to address various issues
on post-tensioned seismic building systems. In both these joint research efforts,
national and international collaborations have been emphasized in order to promote
the effective use of laboratory and human resources. It is believed that through the
collaboration between university professors, graduate students and practitioners, the
advancement of knowledge and dissemination of research results can be accelerated.
This proceedings contains summaries of papers presented at the 2nd US-Taiwan
Workshop on Self-Centering Structural Systems held at NCREE on October 14, 2006.
The first workshop was held on June 6 and 7 in 2005 at NCREE. In the 2nd workshop
a total of 18 papers are presented, covering a wide spectrum of research work on
self-centering structural systems in the US and Taiwan, e.g. the seismic responses of
self-centering beam-to-column connections, column base connections, braces and
walls, and frame systems, and the reliability assessment of self-centering structures. In
addition, a panel discussion is included in the workshop to formulate bilateral
collaborations and future perspectives on this topic.
The organizers of the workshop would like to thank all participants from the US and
Taiwan for their dedicated effort and support. The financial contributions and support
from the US National Science Foundation and the National Science Council of
Taiwan are gratefully acknowledged.
